As Artificial Intelligence has become an integral part of everyday life, I began to wonder what other countries are doing, if anything, to regulate it, or are they at least doing something to protect their citizens?
From everything I have read, the European Union has been the most proactive in creating a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence structure, called the EU AI Act.
The European Parliament passed it on March 13, 2024. It was established on August 1, 2024. The EU led other countries to establish an AI regulatory framework. The EU AI Act is a risk-based categorization and human oversight to ensure that AI development is safe and respectful. This means that they want AI to complement human values.
The EU’s AI Act will roll out in four phases between February 2025 and August 2027. This seems quite appropriate because we are entering a new territory where humans can become very vulnerable, and groups of people in society are wired to focus on human vulnerabilities.
While the European Union promotes innovation, it also understands the importance of the rights and safety of its citizens. Being the first to regulate AI ensures Europe will take the lead in the AI world. This has taken years to ponder, create, and implement. Most of the EU AI Act provisions will begin enforcement on August 2, 2026. The European AI Office and the National Surveillance Authorities will implement, enforce, and supervise these regulations.
I believe world leaders will watch each country to see what works and does not work as each country implements AI Regulations and maneuvers through the unknown territory capable of deceit and destruction of humans. However, I will continue this series by examining other countries’ regulations on Artificial Intelligence.
