Benefits of Artificial Intelligence in Education

Humans are not one-dimensional. That is what makes us dynamic and unique. We may agree on some things, emphatically disagree on others, or remain neutral. Fortunately, as Americans, we have the right to change our minds. However, we do not like being forced to change our minds. It is not always necessary to use force. We can change our minds and draw better or different conclusions when we learn more. Artificial Intelligence has many proponents and many opponents. We must find common ground where we can all meet and allow Artificial Intelligence to complement our intelligence and spur us on to achieve more than we ever would believe.

As an educator, I believe Artificial Intelligence can propel our educational system beyond anything imaginable. I have taught Elementary, Middle, and High School. No matter what one thinks or feels about Artificial Intelligence, it is to our advantage to focus on how AI can be used for good. Let me preface this by saying that we should never allow any entity to have more control over our lives, how we think, and what we think than we, the individual human. Having taught many students, some students do not receive the attention they need to meet acceptable standards of knowledge. This is one area where Artificial Intelligence could bridge the gap.

I still get excited about learning. All students should be excited about acquiring new knowledge, but that is not always the norm. Some students have learning disabilities. Many students have distractions at home that follow them to school and affect their concentration. It saddens me to say that some teachers have lost their zeal for teaching. These teachers may be miserable for different reasons. Lack of support from the administration or perhaps because the administration is under pressure from the school board to meet certain standards without proper funding or support.

One of the most inefficient acts a school does daily is using good teachers to do non-teaching tasks, such as bus duty, cafeteria monitoring, and hallway monitoring outside of class time. Many teachers have been beaten down by the system they once loved. It no longer matters who is at fault. We now have a method to bridge this enormous gap in Education that is failing students, teachers, parents, and, frankly, society.

Artificial Intelligence, if used properly, can decrease or even close many of these gaps that humans have not been able to thus far. High-achieving students should be able to use AI at least fifty percent of the school day because these students have demonstrated excellent reading comprehension and time management skills. This will allow teachers to spend additional time with lower-performing students who require one-on-one instruction.

We must put aside our differences and concentrate on our agreements. We all want every student to achieve their full capabilities. Citizens, especially parents, must insist that school boards do not take this opportunity to dismiss or fire teachers to save money. The students will still need guidance and monitoring. Teachers should not have to work 8 hours in school and then go home and work an additional 3-4 hours on lesson plans. This is the reason I tutor privately and will only teach college in the future. I have not lost my zeal for learning. We must make sure students never lose their zeal for learning.
